Mobile Home with Oceanview in Newfoundland

This mobile home sits on a large lot overlooking the ocean
onto Conception Bay. It has three bedrooms and one bath, a
workshop outside, a storage shed and a playhouse.

Various views.

This property overlooks the ocean, on a paved street, and about
75 yards down the street there is a bluff of public land over-loooking the
ocean. Often people gather here at sunset, with a bottle of wine or just to
picnic and enjoy the view. It is spectacular, and one of my nightly highlights!
It's a social event, and grand fun. The first photo shows the path to the bluff,
and the others show the view of Broadcove, as the adjoining bay is called.

Info About The Property: This report was written by an
American woman who lived here for two or three summers.

This appealing and sturdy home at Black Head, less than two hours “up the shore” from
St. John’s, is modern and very comfortable. The carpeting is new and the tasteful furnishings
are all included. But there’s a welcoming touch of the traditional too, with a refurbished
Newfoundland sea trunk in the spare bedroom and a working pot-bellied woodstove.

It started as an oversized mobile home, then a master bedroom with porch and
private entry was added on, and finally a deck and entry room with sink and
coat hooks was built at the front (this was known as a ‘mud porch’ in the olde
days, where fishers or farmers would stop to wash before entering the main house).

The home is nestled against a grove of whispering Aspen trees, and includes a
well-built garage, woodshed complete with aged fireplace logs, and a playhouse
that looks like a little log cabin. My heart smiles every time I pull up to the
grassy yard and see the cheery colors of the house and outbuildings, the fragrant
lavender hues of my lilac tree in June or the rich burst of white roses in July.
But it’s the sweeping ocean views that thrill me most and keep me coming back.

Just outside the front door is a grassy path that leads up to Black Head – visible
from the porch. I usually end my evening walks at the Head, standing against the
breeze, listening to the sea crash on the wild rocks below as the gulls cry out and
regroup over the waves. On still, warm evenings, a few folks from the neighborhood
may gather on a sheltered slope halfway down to the water, to sing Newfoundland
songs and share a bottle of wine.

There are Humpback Whales in the bay most of the summer! When they come in
real close I can see their great backs curve up and hear their flukes hit the surface.
Sometimes at night, when it’s still and my bedroom window is open, I can hear their
sighs as I drift off to sleep. And the full moon in the late summer and early autumn
months rises over the bay like a massive silver mirror, filling the sky, showering the
water with diamonds, shining into my bedroom so brilliantly that it has actually made
me wake up to acknowledge its awesome presence!

The folks at Black Head and in the surrounding communities of Small Point and
Adam’s Cove, are easy going, warm and welcoming. The Noftels live next door, and
when their families come up on the weekends – complete with teenagers who camp in
the yard – they usually include me in their barbecue feast and plenty of liquid refreshment.
The nearby grocery stop is run by two sisters who are also the local postal agents,
and David Diamond from Adam’s cove is wonderfully helpful in every way. Trevor
Rowe will keep the yard in good order, and everyone watches over the place
when I’m gone to be sure that it’s in fine condition when I return in the spring.

Carbonear is twenty minutes away and provides all things practical at the Avalon Mall.
There’s also a popular theatre festival that runs throughout the summer, and for
better dining I like the NaGeira House B&B. They keep a fully-stocked bar, good wines,
and offer fine service in an intimate atmosphere. Lunch and dinner are prepared fresh
and to-order only, so call ahead to let her know you’re coming. The local theater group
and the B&B present outdoor productions and garden teas here on Sunday afternoons.

Other area attractions and activities include horseback riding, a farm for Newfoundland
Ponies, hikes along the Baccalieu Trail, and an indoor public swimming pool. A drive out
the peninsula, ending at Bay de Verde, will take you to fabulous fishing and sailing
trips around Baccalieu Island with the world’s largest breeding colony of Storm Petrels
and the largest major seabird colony in Newfoundland and Labrador. And the lively,
artsy city of St. John’s is less than two hours away, with trendy shopping, gourmet dining
and late-night entertainment. But you don’t have to go further than your front door
here to enjoy breathtaking scenic beauty, one of the lowest crime rates in the world,
and some of the purest air on earth.
